About Us

Part of the Folk Club Frankfurt e.V.

You don't need to bring a partner with you! No membership fee!

Announcement

Monday 19th February at 20:00 - dancing again in Jugendhaus Heideplatz

Karlruhe: St. Patrick's Day Céilí in the Nikolauskapelle in Karlsruhe-Durlach on Sunday 15. March from 13.00h to c. 17.30

We're very informal!

The Irish Set Dancers Frankfurt are an official group within the Folk Club Frankfurt e.V. We meet almost every week of the year to enjoy the rich variety of traditional Irish dances. It's energetic, involves good teamwork, and judging by the smiles of the dancers, is a lot of fun.

Bring a change of shirts/blouses, a towel and preferably leather soled shoes! No street shoes please.

In contrast to other types of dance, you do not need to bring a partner. Dance Partners are changed between sets, and often within a set itself.

We concentrate more on the the choreography of the dances, and on the basic dance steps. Long explanations are avoided, and we aim for learning by showing and doing. Advanced step classes can be arranged, or simply go to the Willie Clancy Summer School in Ireland and learn them from the world experts.

The classes are held in German, but the instructions for the sets are given in English. This is because all the books on set dancing are in English, the content on internet is in English and when the teachers from Ireland teach at workshop weekends, they teach in English. Our aim is to prepare your for the workshop weekends and for your dancing holidays in Ireland.

What to bring

A change of shirts/blouses

A  towel

Preferably leather soled shoes - they need to slide over the floor.

No street shoes please!!

No partner needed

Setdances are typically danced with four couples. If you don't bring a partner, one will just step up to join you for a dance. Within the dance, partners often change around during the dance. Typically, you don't stay with the same partner for the entire evening, particularly during training.

Learn once, use many times

The dances are made of many building blocks (movements) that occur in some combination many dances. It becomes easier and easier to learn new dances. Each dance of course does contain unique features, but after a while dancing, those are the only ones you need to learn. The sequence of moves must also be learned, though everything is called so you don't have learn everything off by heart.
